What is ChatGPT
Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, generally called ChatGPT, is a chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022. This tool is built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3 family of large language models and is fine-tuned with both supervised and reinforcement learning methods.
Originally, ChatGPT was launched as a prototype on November 30, 2022, and it quickly gathered the attention of the tech communities for its detailed responses and articulate answers across many knowledge domains. It is user-friendly. It puts AI in the hands of the general folks.
Applications of ChatGPT
ChatGPT can be utilized for a wide variety of applications. And its applications are growing day by day in various fields. So, basically, it has a lot of untapped potentials and people have already started digging into its uses. Also, the use of ChatGPT depends on what you’re trying to generate with it. The real appeal of ChatGPT is its ability to describe about a range of subjects. Pretty much anything you can think of asking it, it will do and it can do it in a range of styles as well. For example, it can write essay papers. It can also, write some forms of college papers. It can write poetry. It can do a whole range of text-based tasks fairly well.
The current version of ChatGPT has shown lots of potential (while this article is published) compared to earlier iterations of this technology. A lot of earlier versions of this tool have been locked behind either research doors or complex interfaces. However, the big step forward the OpenAI company made was turning it into a chat interface. That means it became just like talking to anyone you would in WhatsApp, Viber, or iMessages. You as a user, hold a normal conversation with it essentially. And that’s what makes it so accessible and such a game changer in the world of AI.
Possible Disadvantages
Like, a lot of similar other text-based chat models, it has collected information from the web from the open Internet. That means things like Wikipedia knowledge, Google Books, and all the good kinds of stuff. However, it also used the bad stuff available on the internet as its training data. This information may include hate speech, racist manifestos, political fake news, and so on. Also, there is a time-based limitation to the information it collected. That means it doesn’t know anything about the very recent past. It doesn’t know anything that’s really happened in the last year. However future versions of it will be able to collect the depth of web knowledge in real-time. It will be able to give us up-to-date, stories and up-to-date information about what’s happening today in areas near us.
Another set of cons of this technology came in the field of education. As per the recent news, the New York City Department of Education banned access to this technology over fear students are using it to write their end-of-term papers.
OpenAI on its website has listed some of ChatGPT’s limitations. These includes
- ChatGPT sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers.
- ChatGPT is sensitive to tweaks to the input phrasing or attempting the same prompt multiple times.
- This model is often excessively verbose and overuses certain phrases, such as restating that it’s a language model trained by OpenAI.
- It will sometimes respond to harmful instructions or exhibit biased behavior.
Scopes planned by Microsoft
This year, Microsoft invested 10 billion dollars in ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI. The tech community has already started digging into the motives of this investment. One of the major ideas that came out is that Microsoft wants to directly compete with Google and its search engine. Microsoft owns Bing as its search engine which is currently nowhere near the capability of Google’s search engine. Having the backing of AI-based technology from OpenAI’s technologies like ChatGPT will make Bing a go-to search engine for general people and can directly compete with the Google search engine.
Also, just as Facebook used Whatsapp data to make it better, Microsoft is planning to utilize the OpenAI technologies to improve its other tools. Microsoft owns a lot of other technologies which are popular in the market such as LinkedIn, Git, Azure Cloud Technology, and so on. So, with the integration of AI, these other technologies might become more popular and provide more incentives in the future and will also give Microsoft a competitive edge over other companies.
